Which medications can cause acne?

However, these should be used with caution in people with ongoing infections, like tuberculosis (TB). Steroids do not tend to cause significant side effects if they’re taken for a short time or at a low dose. Most steroids are only available on prescription, but a few (such as some creams or nasal sprays) can be bought from pharmacies and shops. This can help treat autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, which are caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the body.

Liver changes

How often do you have steroids?

Avoid close contact with people who’ve recently had live vaccines taken by mouth (oral vaccines) such as oral polio or the typhoid vaccine. Blood clots can develop in the deep veins of your body, usually the leg. A blood clot can be very serious if it travels to your lungs (pulmonary embolism), although this isn’t common.

Managing side effects

Some other skin problems, such as rosacea, acne and ulcers, can be made worse by steroid creams so you might not be able to take them if you have any of these conditions. Steroids can be taken in a number of ways for many different types of arthritis and related conditions, as shown in the table below. Corticosteroids can decrease the effectiveness of medications used to treat diabetes. Steroid tablets that are taken for a short period of time are unlikely to cause side effects.
